Think Before You Post…

Facebook, MySpace, and Other Personal Sites*

Facebook and MySpace are great ways to stay in touch with friends from home and to make new ones here once students arrive and get involved in HCCC life. But there are also some points that students should always think about when using technology to talk with others. Parents and family members should talk with their students about protecting themselves when using technologies like Facebook and MySpace.

  • Be familiar with privacy settings on your account(s) to monitor who can look at your profile. Customer service pages, for example with Facebook, contain great information about privacy controls and other important safety information.
  • Be smart about what you post on line—your future employer, your teachers and even your parents might just see what you’ve posted!
  • Google your name every so often to see what is on line about you.
  • Don’t share overly personal information, like your class schedule or where you live.
  • Remember that once you post something, it may live long after you take it down!
  • Have fun with your profile, but just be safe, legal and responsible!
