DEGREE MAPS FOR FDNY PERSONNEL
September 2002
The primary goal of the FDNY Corporate University is to assist personnel to continue their education and obtain college credit. A corporate university seeks credit for the training a company or an agency provides, forms partnerships with colleges and universities which accept the credits and then provides access to the remaining courses necessary to earn the degree. Often these remaining college credits can be obtained on line. This process is known as “degree mapping.” Eventually, the FDNY Corporate University will offer multiple degree maps to employees, retired personnel and their families. In this early stage, the Office of Fire and Life Safety is pleased to announce three pending degree maps leading to the associates and/or bachelor’s diploma. Each is described below:
1. Business Administration: Advanced standing will be offered by Herkimer County Community College (HCCC) to FDNY personnel for their on-the-job training, business involvement outside the Department and any coursework completed in other educational institutions. Up to 30 credits may be granted. An additional 33 will lead to the associate’s (AS) degree. FDNY employees with computer access may register immediately into the HCCC Internet Academy (www.hcccia.com) and begin online coursework. Classes tend to fill up quickly, so early registration is advised. Once the AA degree is complete, New York University (NYU) will enable students to earn the bachelor’s degree through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies by accepting the HCCC credits.
HCCC will be conducting an assessment of FDNY Supervisory/Leadership Program during the 2002-2003 Academic Year (September 2002 through August 2003) for the purpose of awarding college credit to FDNY members who have successfully completed courses in that program. FDNY students may begin taking courses immediately and receive credit for the FDNY Supervisory/Leadership Program when the assessment process has been completed. Students should select HCCC courses that do not duplicate courses they have taken through the FDNY Supervisory/Leadership Program. Students may want to begin with the non-business courses in areas such as English, Science, Computer Software Applications, History, Mathematics, and Liberal Arts. For advisement regarding course selection, please contact the Internet Academy by email or call toll free at 1-888-464-4222, ext. 8422.
2. Associate in EMT-Paramedic Degree (AAS): FDNY personnel who have obtained EMT-P certification will be eligible for up to 39 credits for their EMT-P training and time in the EMS Academy. An additional 30 will lead to the associate’s degree. FDNY employees with computer access may register immediately into the HCCC Internet Academy (www.herkimer.edu/internetacademy) and begin online coursework. Classes tend to fill up quickly, so early registration is advised. Once the AAS degree is complete, New York University (NYU) will enable students to earn the bachelor’s degree through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies by accepting the HCCC credits.
HCCC as conducted an assessment of the EMS Paramedic programs available to FDNY members in New York City and has established the following guidelines:
EMT Paramedic Credit Recommendations for FDNY
To earn a HCCC degree, students must successfully complete at least 30 credit hours from HCCC for the degree and provide documentation of successful completion of EMT/Paramedic Training as outlined below.
Transfer Credit Any paramedic student who has previously been awarded college credit for paramedic education may apply for acceptance of those courses as transfer credits to HCCC. Normally, grades of "C" or better will be considered for transfer credit. Grades of "D" may be considered as long as the average of credits transferred is "C" or better. Records from other colleges will be evaluated in terms of academic credit applicable to the course offerings as Herkimer County Community College.
Documentation required: Official transcript.
Credit for Prior Learning
For a 1985 NSC program that was evaluated by PONSI, HCCC will award 32 credits if the student has also passed the re-certification exam as of 2002 or later.
Documentation required: proof of successful completion of the 1985 curriculum (25 credits) with a passing grade on the new re-certification exam, 2002 or later (7 credits).

3. Criminal Justice: Herkimer Community College will award up to 30 credits for FDNY training offered to fire marshals. An additional 35 will lead to the associate’s (AS) degree. FDNY employees with computer access may register immediately into the HCCC Internet Academy (www.herkimer.edu/internetacademy) and begin online coursework. Classes tend to fill up quickly, so early registration is advised. Once the AA degree is complete, New York University (NYU) will enable students to earn the bachelor’s degree through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies by accepting the HCCC credits.
The FDNY Fire Marshall Training Program is currently being assessed for college credit by The American Council on Education (ACE). HCCC will determine the number of credit hours that it will accept for FDNY members who have successfully completed this training when ACE announces its recommendations.
HCCC/NYU TRANSFER AGREEMENTS FOR FDNY MEMBERS
Herkimer County Community College and New York University are cooperating on the creation of a degree map for FDNY members. NYU is in the process of evaluating the degree programs offered by HCCC’s Internet Academy so that students may complete the first two years of study through HCCC’s Internet Academy and then transfer that credit to NYU and complete the last two years of a bachelor degree program there.

Students who complete the AAS Human Services at HCCC degree may transfer a maximum of 64 credits towards the BS in Healthcare Management at NYU. Students must earn a 3.0 cumulative GPA at HCCC. Students must have attained a grade of “C” or better to earn transfer credit. Physical education, cooking/dining room service, performance, workshop, and/or studio courses are not transferable as Liberal Arts or Professional Core Requirements courses. Some of these credits may transfer as unrestricted electives.
