Future HCCC Student Named Daily Messenger Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year

The difference for Kurt Vowell at this year's state outdoor track and field championships was a simple one — the presence of his dad, Ken Vowell.

"My dad has always been there for me, but at the indoor state meet, he couldn’t come because of work,” Vowell said. “He’s always been my coach, and he’s been someone I could rely on."

While his performance at the indoor meet wasn't exactly terrible — he missed winning the long jump by 2 1/2 inches — his outdoor campaign capped off exactly as he had hoped. He won a state title in front of his father, a former long jumper at Kent State University in Ohio.

"I trained really hard last summer, and it paid off," said Vowell, who is this year's Daily Messenger Athlete of the Year in boys track. "Losing in indoor was disappointing since it’s out of all the kids in New York (compared to divisions 1 and 2 in outdoor)." more...
