Former Herkimer County Community College men's soccer player Ryan Pierce helped lead the Baltimore Blast to win the 2008 Major Indoor Soccer League Championship. The Blast defeated La Raza (Mexico) by a score of 14-11 Saturday to win their fourth championship in six years.

"Ryan has won two professional soccer championships in one year in two different leagues," said HCCC soccer coach Pepe Aragon. "What he has accomplished in his first year as a professional is amazing. Most players go through their entire career without ever winning a championship."

Pierce also helped lead the Harrisburg City Islanders of the United Soccer League Second Division to a title last summer.

Dwight BarnettFormer Herkimer County Community College men's soccer star Dwight Barnett, who plays for the Montreal Impact of the United Soccer League First Division, scored his first goal of his professional soccer career in the 83rd minute of a 2-1 victory over Miami FC. Barnett dribbled past the goalkeeper and chipped a defender for the game winning goal.

"Dwight is a tremendous forward with a gift for scoring," said Generals coach Pepe Aragon. A native of Jamaica, NY, Barnett graduated from HCCC in December 2005.

The Impact will travel to Atlanta on Friday, April 25 to take on the Silverbacks in a game that will be aired live on national television. Kick-off is at 8:00 p.m. on Fox Soccer Channel.

Soccer Team Participates in America's Greatest Heart Run and Walk

The HCCC men’s soccer team ran three miles in America's Greatest Heart Run and Walk on Saturday, March 8. The team joined with other faculty and staff to form "Team HCCC " captained by College President Ronald F. Williams. The annual event raised $1,204,594 for the Amercian Heart Association. “It was great to get the guys together to support such a great cause,” s aid men’s soccer coach Pepe Aragon. “My father had open heart surgery about 10 years ago and is living a great life today thanks to the medical advances made possible by research.”

Former Herkimer men’s soccer player Ryan Pierce recorded his first professional goal in an 18-2 victory.  Pierce, who plays for the Baltimore Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League, scored the first goal of the game against the Philadelphia Kixx which was aired live on Fox Soccer Channel. The Blast are currently in third place with six games remaining before play-offs.  “It was great to see Ryan score on national television,” said Men’s Soccer Coach Pepe Aragon. “He is really making a name for himself.”

Ten Men's Soccer Players Named to Dean's List

Ten members of the HCCC men’s soccer team have been named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2007 semester. The student-athletes named are seniors Ivan Guarin, David Baldanza, Stefano Magroand Daisuke Ito, and freshmen Sean Trinidad, Joey Lontrato, Emmanuel Yovance, Nate Sanzo, Aaron Maldonado and Mike Bellino.To be named to the Dean’s List, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better. "These students are leaders in the classroom as well as on the soccer field," said coachPepe Aragon."They are great examples for other student-athletes. The entire Herkimer soccer family is very proud of their accomplishments."

Former Herkimer County Community College soccer player Dwight Barnett was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Daktronics National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II All-American teams.

Barnett was named 2005 NSCAA Division III National Player of the Year and was a first-team All-American while at Herkimer. After leading the Generals to their sixth NJCAA Division III national championship, he received a scholarship to Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, where he is a business administration major. The Jamaica, NY, native became the first Fighting Knight in program history to be selected as the Conference Offensive Player of the Year finishing in the top five in the Sunshine State Conference in goals (14), assists (10) and points (38). He helped lead Lynn University to back-to-back NCAA national tournament appearances. He also was named a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American for academic excellence at Lynn.

Barnett will receive his All-American award along with current Herkimer standout Ivan Guarin, of New Rochelle, NY, who was selected as a first-team NSCAA Division III Junior College All-American. They will attend the NSCAA All-American banquet on January 19 in Baltimore MD. “It will be a historic day for HCCC and for me,” said Pepe Aragon. “To watch Dwight and Ivan walk across the same stage will be a proud moment in my career.”

Herkimer--The Herkimer County Community College men’s soccer team paired up with the Salvation Army to adopt a family for the holidays. The players and coaching staff donated gifts this week before heading home for their winter break and were able to meet captains Dolly and Steve Griffin who are pastors of the Herkimer Salvation Army. “We decided, as a team, that we wanted to do something special for the holidays,” said coach Pepe Aragon. “What the Griffins do for the Salvation Army is amazing. They are great role models for our community.”

Herkimer Soccer Player Named All-American

Herkimer County Community College men's soccer player Ivan Guarin has been named first team NSCAA and NJCAA All-American. Guarin had 10 goals and 17 assists this season leading the Generals to their 18th consecutive Region III championship and fourth place national finish. He will receive his award at the NSCAA National Soccer Coaches Convention in Baltimore, MD on Saturday, January 19.

Guarin was also named 2007 Region III Player of the Year. “Ivan is one of the classiest student-athletes I have ever coached,” said coach Pepe Aragon. “He is the complete package-a great athlete, student and person.”

A graduate of White Plains High School, Guarin will graduate from HCCC this semester. He has narrowed down his college choices to Boston College, University of Hartford or Binghamton University for the spring semester.

HCCC Soccer Players Play In All-Star Game

Six Herkimer County Community College soccer players participated in the 2007 Region III men’s all-star game on Saturday, December 1. The event was held at the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex in Binghamton, one of the largest indoor soccer facilities in the country. Representing the Generals were Region III Player of the Year Ivan Guarin, first team All-Region Earl Chase, first team All-Conference Sebastian Keczmerski and starters Sam Kennedy, Evan Chase and Daisuke Ito. The game featured Region III’s most talented seniors who showcased their skills in front of Division I, II and III schools throughout New York State. “This was the first time we held this event after our regional final four tournament. It allowed us to field the best talent in the region,” said HCCC coach and Region III President Pepe Aragon.  “It was a great night of soccer.”2007 Region III Men's Soccer Game

 

Senior midfielder Pete Givas, of Liverpool, helped the Herkimer Generals win the program's 19th Region III men's soccer championship. Givas was voted Region III Final Four MVP, made the all-tournament team and was named to the first team All-Region III. Earlier in the month, he was selected Region III Athlete of the Week and NJCAA Division III National Player of the Week. Head Coach Pepe Aragon said, "Pete was the 'general' of our defense this season."

HCCC Alum Dwight Barnett Named Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Year

Former Herkimer County Community College soccer player Dwight Barnett was recently named Offensive Player of the Year for the Sunshine State Conference. Barnett attends NCAA Division II Lynn University (FL) where he is the first Fighting Knight to be selected Offensive Player of the Year in program history. He established career-highs with 14 goals, nine assists and 37 points, finishing second in the conference in each category. The Jamaica, N.Y. native graduated from HCCC in December 2005.

Dr. Williams Honored at 2007 National Championship Soccer Banquet

HCCC President Ronald F. Williams was honored at the 2007 National Championship Soccer Banquet held on November 9 at the Best Western in Little Falls. Dr. Williams was presented with a Herkimer Generals jersey and plaque to recognize his dedication and support of the athletic program.

HCCC's Givas Named National Player of the Week

Herkimer County Community College senior defender Pete Givas (Liverpool, NY/ Liverpool HS) was honored this week as the NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Player of the Week. He was also named Region III Player of the Week earlier this week. Givas led the Generals' defense to two shutouts in three regional play-off games to lead Herkimer to their 18th consecutive Region III championship. For his outstanding defensive play, he was named MVP of the Region III Final Four. "Pete is a leader on and off the field. He is great at organizing our backs and midfielders," said Coach Pepe Aragon.

Herkimer will compete in the NJCAA national championship soccer tournament on November 10-11 at HCCC's Wehrum Stadium. The complete tournament schedule and brackets will be announced next week.

Herkimer Men's Soccer Honors

Herkimer County Community College midfielder Ivan Guarin, New Rochelle, NY/White Plains High School, was named 2007 Region III Player of the Year. Guarin is second in points for the Generals with 10 goals and 15 assists. He was also selected to the first team all-Region III, along with senior forward Mark Gunsch, Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington High School, senior midfielder Earl Chase IV, Galway, NY/Galway High School, and senior defender Pete Givas, Liverpool/Liverpool High School. "All four players are leaders on and off the field," said Coach Pepe Aragon.

Herkimer Alum Makes Professional Indoor Soccer Debut

Herkimer County Community College soccer alumnus Ryan Pierce, Cobleskill, recently made his professional indoor soccer debut for the Baltimore Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League. The Blast beat the Philadelphia Kixx 8-2 at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Maryland to open the 2007-08 Major Indoor Soccer League season on October 19. A 2005 graduate of HCCC, Pierce was the 2002 Region III Player of the Year and a first team NSCAA All-American.

Men's Soccer Wins 18th Consecutive Region III Championship

The Herkimer County Community College men's soccer team won its 18th consecutive Region III championship with a 1-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill. The Generals beat Tompkins-Cortland CC 7-1 on Saturday to advance to the finals.

Mountain Valley Conference Honors for HCCC Soccer Players

Herkimer County Community College women's soccer player Dana Gentile, Utica, was recently named 2007 Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year. Gentile was also named to the All-Conference team along with freshmen Danielle Filbeck, Amsterdam, NY, and Samantha Reddington, Poland, NY.

Several members of the Herkimer Generals men's soccer team were also named to the All-Conference team. They include seniors Mark Gunsch, Pleasant Valley, NY; Earl Chase, Galway, NY; Pete Givas, Liverpool, NY; and Sebastian Keczmerski, Hawa, Poland; and freshman Lee Martins, Bridgeport, CT.

Herkimer Soccer Teams to Compete in Region III Final Four This Weekend

The Herkimer Generals' men's and women's soccer teams each won the Region III quarterfinal games on Tuesday, October 23. The women's team won 4-1 over SUNY Delhi. Dana Gentile, a forward from Whitesboro, scored three of the goals for Herkimer, with Danielle Filbeck adding one goal. The men's team won against Broome Community College 5-0. Both teams will go on to play in the Region III final four tournament this weekend at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. The women will play Hudson Valley Community College at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, and the men will play Tompkins-Cortland Community College Saturday at 4:45 p.m. The championship games will be played Sunday at noon for the women and 3 p.m. for the men. HCCC Men's and Women's Soccer Teams in Regionals

The HCCC men's and women's soccer teams both received a first round bye in the Region III Tournament. The men's team ended the regular season 12-2-1 and qualified as the #2 seed, while the women's team ended the regular season 13-4 and qualified as the #3 seed.

The men's and women's soccer teams will next be in action at HOME on Tuesday, October 23 for the quarter final round. The women's game will begin at 4:00 p.m. with the men's game following at 6:00 p.m.  Admission is free. Come out and support your Generals in their quest for a Region III championship.

Guarin Named NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer Player of the Week

Herkimer County Community College midfielder Ivan Guarin has been named NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending September 30. A senior from Rochelle, NY, Guarin helped lead HCCC to three victories last week by scoring four goals and five assists. He currently leads the Generals in points with seven goals and seven assists. "Ivan is the general of our offense. He is one of the most talented midfielders to have played for me," said head coach Pepe Aragon.

HCCC's Craan Named Male Athlete of the Week

Herkimer County Community College men's soccer player Johann Craan was named Male Athlete of the Week for Region III. Craan helped the Generals to two shutout victories during the Coliseum Soccer Club Classic held Labor Day Weekend at HCCC's Wehrum Stadium. Herkimer won 2-0 against Santa Rosa Junior College (CA) and 1-0 against Borough of Manhattan Community College. With the game winning assist for the second game, Craan was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament. Craan is a freshman Sports and Recreation Management major from Queens Village, NY and a graduate of Bradenton Prep Academy.

Former HCCC Soccer Players Win Championship

Ryan Pierce and Matt Tanzini, both former Herkimer Generals who now play professional soccer for the Harrisburg City Islanders, helped defeat the Richmond Kickers 8-7 in a nine-round penalty kick shootout Saturday night after playing to a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes of regulation and overtime. Pierce converted the eighth and final penalty kick to help the Islanders claim their first United Soccer League Second Division Championship. The game took place at the University of Richmond Stadium and was broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel.

"It was great to watch both players win a professional championship on national TV," said HCCC men's soccer coach Pepe Aragon. "I am very proud and happy for them."

Former Herkimer Generals Soccer Star Earns Honors

The United Soccer League announced that former Herkimer County Community College men's soccer player Dwight Barnett was named to the Premier Development League all-Eastern Conference Team. Barnett played for the Cape Cod Crusaders this summer and scored 16 goals during the season. His tally was enough to finish second in the country in the race for the PDL Golden Boot award.

A Jamaica, N.Y. native, Barnett graduated from Herkimer County Community College in December 2005 with a degree in Business Administration. Barnett is now a senior at NCAA Division II Lynn University (FL) where he has caught the attention of many Major League Soccer coaches.

HCCC Alumni to Play Soccer on National TV

Former Herkimer County Community College men's soccer players Ryan Pierce and Matt Tanzini will play in the United Soccer League's Second Division championship game. Both play for the Harrisburg City Islanders and will take on the Richmond Kickers in Richmond, Virginia. The game will be broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel on Saturday, August 25 on delay at 10:00 pm eastern time following an MLS match broadcast.

The Herkimer County Community College men's soccer team will host SUNY Cortland in a preseason game on Saturday, August 25 at Wehrum Stadium. The Generals will end preseason play on Wednesday, August 29 with a home game against Hamilton College. Kick-off for both games is at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free of charge.

HCCC Generals to Take on American International

The Herkimer County Community College men's soccer team will host NCAA Division II American International College in a pre-season game on Wednesday, August 22. Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m. at Wehrum Stadium. Herkimer alumni Chris Charles '06 and Leo Santos '07, both former Generals stars from the 2005 national championship team, will help lead the Yellow Jackets. Admission to the game is free of charge.

Former Generals Soccer Star Scores Against MLS Team

Former Herkimer all-American Matt Tanzini (pictured, right)scored in the 78th minute in a 2-1 loss to MLS New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro Massachusetts.  The game was part of the U.S. Open Cup.  The Revolution now move on to the semi-finals. 

Herkimer soccer alums Tanzini and Ryan Pierce (pictured, left) play for the Harrisburg City Islanders of the United Soccer League Division 2.  "Tanzini's free kick goal from 35 yards out on MLS all star goalkeeper Matt Reis was unbelievable". Said Herkimer soccer coach Pepe Aragon.  "It was exciting to watch Ryan mark U.S. National Team forward Taylor Twellman the whole game".  "Both players were a great representation of Herkimer".

The Islanders will now prepare for their league playoffs.

Former Generals Help Defeat D.C. United

Former Herkimer soccer stars Matt Tanzini and Ryan Pierce who play for the Harrisburg City Islanders of the United Soccer League Division 2 defeated D.C. United of Major League Soccer 1-0 Wednesday night.  The game was in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup and was played in Landisville, PA in front of 5200 fans.

Tanzini won a national championship at Herkimer in 1995 and 1996 and Pierce captained back to back national runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2002.  "I am extremely proud and excited for both players to compete against two of the best MLS franchises in the league."  Said Generals coach Pepe Aragon.

The Islanders now move on to the quarter-final round where they will face the New England Revolution, also of the MLS on August 7th.

Former HCCC Player Named 2007 Male Scholar Athlete of the Year at Bryant University

Former Herkimer County Community College men's soccer star Sam Grande was named the 2007 Male Scholar Athlete of the Year at Bryant University. Grande graduated Cum Laude from Bryant with the highest GPA of all the male athletes. During his senior year, Grande helped lead the Bulldogs soccer team to an 8-5-3 record.

A 2005 graduate of HCCC, Grande led the Generals to a national runner-up finish in 2004 and received an academic scholarship to Bryant. "I am extremely proud of Sam for his academic and athletic accomplishments," said HCCC men's soccer coach Pepe Aragon.

2007 HCCC Athletic Awards

Leo Santos, Brasil, was awarded the Pop Walsh Award, an annual award given to the Herkimer County Community College male student-athlete who displays the highest level of sportsmanship, dedication and commitment to his team and the athletic program. A senior, Santos was a member of Herkimer's 2005 national and regional championship soccer team. He also helped lead the 2006 team to a Region III championship title and a runner-up finish in the national championship finals. Santos was also named the Most Improved Player for 2006-07.

Other awards:
Casey Bartlett, Whitesboro, received the Perry Nizzi Award and Ryan Brooks-Newton, Selkirk, received the Coach's Award.

Men's Soccer to Take on Syracuse University

The Herkimer County Community College Men's Soccer Team will be playing NCAA Division I Syracuse University in a spring game Tuesday, April 24th.  Kick-off is at 6:00pm at Wehrum Stadium and admission is free.

Miguel Martinez Accepts NSCAA National Player of the Year Award

Men's soccer player Miguel Martinez, White Plains, NY, was recently honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as Junior College National Player of the Year for Division III. Former General Scores Against MLS Team

Former Herkimer County Community College soccer star Dwight Barnett scored for NCAA Division II Lynn University in the 56th minute in a 3-2 loss against Major League Soccer's Toronto FC. The match was a pre-season game for Toronto featuring MLS stars Alecko Eskandarian and Edson Buddle. In the fall, Barnett led the Lynn University Fighting Knights in scoring with 12 goals and six assists for 30 points. He helped them advance to the NCAA Division II tournament second round where they lost 2-1 to the University of West Florida and finished with a record of 15-2. Barnett graduated from HCCC in 2005 and transferred to Lynn University (Boca Raton, FL) where he received a full athletic scholarship.

Aragon Recognized with Lew Andreas Award

Herkimer County Community College men's soccer coach Pepe Aragon received the Lew Andreas Award, presented by the Blind Men and Criers, an organization of referees, coaches, spectators and fans, at its annual dinner meeting held earlier this month. Named for former Syracuse University football and basketball coach Lewis Andreas, the award is given annually to an individual for outstanding contributions and service to the community.

In nine seasons as head coach for the Herkimer Generals, Aragon has amassed an overall record of 167-14-9. Aragon is a three-time NSCAA National Coach of the Year (1999, 2000, 2005), two-time Region III Coach of the Year (1999, 2005) and Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year (2004, 2005). Blind Men and Criers committee member Mark Weatherup said "Pepe was chosen for this award because of his incredible coaching record, as well as his exemplary contributions as a coach, teacher and mentor. He is a real class act." Past recipients of the Lew Andreas Award include former Syracuse University football coach Dick MacPherson and Time Warner Sports general manager Doug Logan.

Held at the New York State Fair Grounds in Syracuse, the organization's annual event featured guest speaker Jack Emmer, college lacrosse's all-time winningest head coach in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's history. Past speakers included Billy Martin, George Steinbrenner, Bob Costas and Joe Paterno.

"This award is yet another testament to Pepe's great accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and in the community," said Donald Dutcher, Director of Athletics at HCCC. Aragon is also a full-time Health and Physical Education Instructor at Herkimer. Aragon holds an A.S. in Physical Education from Herkimer County Community College, B.S. in Physical Education from Bowling Green State University and M.S. in Health Education from SUNY Cortland. He and his wife Anastacia have two children and reside in New Hartford, NY.

HCCC Soccer Players Named to NSCAA All-American Team

Herkimer County Community College men's soccer players Miguel Martinez, White Plains, and Joe Hunt, London, England, have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Junior College Division III All-American team.

Named to the first team for the second time, Martinez was named the NSCAA Division III National Junior College Player of the Year last month. He scored 25 goals and had 30 assists in two years at Herkimer, leading the Generals to two Mountain Valley and Region III championships and a NJCAA Division III national championship in 2006. A two-time Region III Player of the Year, Martinez was the 2005 National Final Four MVP and is a two-time NSCAA/adidas All-America.

With 28 goals and 19 assists, Hunt was named to the second team. Hunt led the Generals in scoring and made the game-winning goal in the Region III championship game in double overtime against SUNY Cobleskill.

Both players will receive their awards this week at the NSCAA Soccer Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Martinez Selected NSCAA Player of the Year

Herkimer, NY- Men's soccer player Miguel Martinez, White Plains, NY, has been named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Junior College National Player of the Year. With 21 goals and 26 assists in his two years at Herkimer, Martinez is the sixth men's soccer player from Herkimer to receive this honor. Martinez scored the game-winning goal in the national semi-final game against Potomac College (West Virginia) and assisted on Herkimer's only goal in the national championship game. "Miguel is one of the best offensive midfielders I have ever coached. He has a tremendous future ahead of him," said coach Pepe Aragon. The Generals came in second place in the nation and finished the season with an overall record of 20-2-1. Martinez was also named NSCAA and NJCAA First Team All-American (2005 and 2006) and Region III Player of the Year (2005 and 2006), and was the November 2006 selection for HCCC's Green and Gold Club. Freshman Ivan Guarin scored Herkimer's only goal in the
NJCAA national championship game versus Richland College (TX).

The Herkimer Generals (#1 seed) lost 3-1 to Richland College (#3 seed) in the NJCAA Division III national championship game at Wehrum Stadium. Alberto Rodriquez recorded a hat trick to lead the Thunderducks. Rodriquez scored his first goal with 21:44 left in the first half off a shot just inside of the penalty area.  He scored his second goal off a rebound with 8:14 left in the half.  Freshman Ivan Guarin brought the game within one goal with 9:15 left in the second half off an assist from Miguel Martinez. Rodriquez scored his third goal with 1:23 left in the game when Herkimer pushed everyone forward in an attempt to tie the game.  Senior Ryan Brooks-Newton recorded three saves in 90 minutes.  The Generals finished the season with a 20-2-1 record.

Senior Joe Hunt scored the game winner, with 4:28 left in the second sudden death overtime, off an assist from freshman Ivan Guarin. Goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton recorded his 12 th shutout of the season by making four saves in 103 minutes of play. Freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Keczmerski finished the game for the Generals after Brooks-Newton suffered a concussion making a breakaway save. Herkimer advances to the NJCAA Division III National Final Four November 11-12 at HCCC’s Wehrum Stadium.

Herkimer went up 2-0 by halftime on goals by Gunsch and freshman Ivan Guarin. Hunt opened up the second half by scoring the first two goals on assists by Santos and freshman Pete Givas. Gunsch finished off the scoring on an assist from Guarin. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton recorded two saves in 75 minutes off action. Freshman Sebastian Keczmerski had two saves in the final 15 minutes. The #1 nationally ranked Generals advance to the Region III semi-finals against #4 Alfred State on Saturday.

Hunt and Brooks Newton Earn Soccer Awards

Herkimer County Community College forward Joe Hunt, a senior from London, England, has been named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Player of the Week and Region III Male Co-Athlete of the Week. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton, Selkirk, was selected NJCAA Division III Goalie of the Week.

Hunt scored two goals against Finger Lakes Community College in the Region III quarterfinal, had a goal and an assist in a regional semi-final against SUNY Alfred, and scored the game-winning goal in a double overtime win over SUNY Cobleskill in the Region III championship game. Hunt is currently ranked second in scoring in the nation with 28 goals. Coach Pepe Aragon said "Joe was tremendous in all three regional play-off games. He is a true goal scorer.”

Brooks-Newton had a total of 15 saves during the week with five against Finger Lakes, four against Alfred, and six in the championship game against Cobleskill. His season record is currently 19-1-1.

Herkimer’s men’s soccer team won the Region III championship last week and will compete in the NJCAA Division III Final Four at HCCC’s Wehrum Stadium on Saturday, November 11.

The Generals got back to their winning ways by defeating 11th-ranked Genesee Community College 1-0. Freshman Mark Gunsch scored with 6.4 seconds left in the game off an assist from senior Joe Hunt. Hunt passed the ball between two defenders 45 yards out to put Gunsch on a one-on-one breakaway with Johnny D’Amato. Gunsch placed the ball low and to the left side of D’Amato for his 14 th goal of the season. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton recorded his ninth shutout of the season by making four saves including a breakaway with 15 seconds left in the first half. This was the Generals’ final regular season game before the Region III play-offs begin next week. The Region III seedings and schedule will be announced Wednesday, October 18.

Hunt Named NJCAA Male Athlete of the Week

Herkimer County Community College soccer player Joe Hunt has been named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Male Athlete of the Week. A senior from London, England, Hunt helped lead the Herkimer Generals in three games last week with nine goals and four assists. He scored five goals against Broome Community College, two against Finger Lakes Community College, and two against Adirondack Community College. Hunt currently leads the NJCAA Division III ranks with 41 points so far this season.

Coach Pepe Aragon said "Joe is a tremendous finisher inside the penalty area. He has come up big for us on numerous occasions.”

Hunt is a Physical Education major at Herkimer and a 2005 graduate of Goffs High School. Herkimer’s men’s soccer team is currently ranked first in the nation according to the latest NJCAA Division III national poll.

Brooks-Newton Named NJCAA Player of the Week

Herkimer County Community College goalie Ryan Brooks-Newton has been named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Soccer Player of the Week. A senior from Selkirk, N.Y., Brooks-Newton helped the #1 nationally ranked Herkimer Generals win two contests last week with a total of 16 saves. Herkimer beat Fulton-Montgomery Community College 5-0, the second shutout of the season for Brooks-Newton; and NJCAA Division I Schoolcraft College (Michigan) 3-1. Brooks-Newton ranks ninth in the NJCAA Division III ranks with 42 saves on 47 shots on goal so far this season. Coach Pepe Aragon said "Ryan has a tremendous work ethic and is being recruited by a number of Division I and II schools throughout the country.” Brooks-Newton is a Physical Education major at Herkimer. He is a 2005 graduate of Bishop Maginn High School (Albany, N.Y.).

Mark Gunsch Named NJCAA Male Athlete of the Week

Herkimer County Community College’s men’s soccer player Mark Gunsch was named Male Athlete of the Week for the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division III, Region III. A freshman forward, Gunsch scored three goals in a 4-1 win last week against SUNY Cobleskill. He currently has four goals and three assists this season.

Coach Pepe Aragon said "Mark has stepped in as a freshman and made a big impact on our offense. He continues to grow as a player every time he steps on the field."

Gunsch is a Sports and Recreation Management major from Poughkeepsie. He is a 2006 graduate of Arlington High School.

Brooks-Newton made two saves in 90 minutes of play. The Generals will host Cayuga County Community College on Wednesday in a double-header with the women’s team. Alumnus Dwight Barnett Named Male Athlete of the Year

Former Herkimer County Community College soccer star Dwight Barnett has been named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) 2006 Region III Male Athlete of The Year for the second consecutive year. Barnett was selected for this honor based on his accomplishments on the national championship Generals soccer team last fall. A two-time first team All-American, Barnett scored 53 goals and had 34 assists in his two seasons playing for Herkimer. He led the Generals to the 2005 NJCAA national championship and the 2004 national runner-up finish. Previous awards received by Barnett include 2005 NSCAA/Adidas Division III Junior College National Player of the Year, 2005 Region III Male Athlete of the Year and Region III Co-Player of the Year (with teammate Miguel Martinez). “I am extremely proud of Dwight,” said coach Pepe Aragon. “He is a class act both on and off of the field.” A Jamaica, N.Y. native, Barnett graduated from Herkimer County Community College in December 2005 with a degree in Business Administration.   Herkimer, NY--The Herkimer Generals moved to a 5-0 record on the season by beating the Fulton Montgomery Raiders 5-0 at Wehrum Stadium.

Freshman Mark Gunsch opened up the scoring with 18:46 remaining in the first half on an assist from senior Ayinde George. Gunsch’s shot beat FMCC goalkeeper Brian Shoemaker high to the near post from 18 yards out. Freshman David Baldanza, a Herkimer High School graduate, scored his first goal of the season 12 minutes into the second half on a great combination play with Gunsch. Baldanza beat two defenders and placed the ball low to the far post. Senior captain Casey Bartlett also scored his first goal of the season with 25:16 remaining off a rebound shot from freshman Ivan Gaurin. Guarin’s direct kick to the far post was saved by Shoemaker, and Bartlett followed up with a shot from five yards out. Gunsch scored his second goal of the game three minutes later off an assist from Baldanza. Freshman Stefano Magro, a Frankfort High School graduate, finished off the scoring with 17:31 left in the game from an assist from senior Romaine Bruney. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton recorded his second shutout of the season by making four saves in 70 minutes. Freshman Sebastian Keczmerski made one save in the last 20 minutes.

The #1 nationally ranked Generals are back in action at Wehrum Stadium on Saturday, September 16 when they take on Schoolcraft CC ( Michigan). Kick-off is at 7:00pm.

Herkimer’s Evan Waggoner scored two goals and one assist against Hudson Valley Community College
Troy, NY—Herkimer senior Joe Hunt scored 18 minutes into the game off an assist from freshman Ivan Guarin. Freshman Evan Waggoner scored his first goal of the game five minutes later off an assist from senior Leo Santos. Hunt set up the third goal of the game two minutes later on a pass to freshman Chris Hlywa. Zubair Khan scored Hudson Valley’s unassisted goal with 12:32 remaining in the first half. Hlywa finished off the scoring for the Generals in the first half by netting his second goal of the game on a pass from Hunt.

Waggoner opened up the second half by scoring his second goal of the game on a pass from Santos five minutes in. Senior Ayinde George scored his first goal of the season nine minutes later off an assist from Waggoner. Senior Romaine Bruney finished off the scoring with 18 minutes remaining on a pass from senior Handy Eugene. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton played 70 minutes and made five saves, including a spectacular save in the first half when one of Hudson Valley’s forwards headed the ball to the lower far post. Brooks-Newton dove and caught the potential tying goal. Freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Keczmerski played the last 20 minutes and had one breakaway save.The Generals are back in action Thursday, September 14 when they host Fulton-Montgomery CC at Wehrum Stadium. Kick-off is at 7:00pm.

The Generals opened Region III play with a 4-1 victory over SUNY Cobleskill at Wehrum Stadium. Freshman Mark Gunsch recorded his first collegiate hat trick to lead Herkimer. Gunsch scored his first goal 11:00 minutes into the game off an assist from senior Miguel Martinez. Freshman Ivan Guarin set up Gunsch for his second goal of the game with 15:00 minutes left in the first half. Gunsch opened the second half by scoring his third goal off an assist from senior Joe Hunt 13:00 minutes in. Senior Leo Santos scored the Generals’ fourth goal with 12:05 remaining off an assist from Guarin. SUNY Cobleskill got on the scoring board with 1:45 remaining in the game on a penalty kick by Essaha Jallow. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton had five saves. The Generals will go on the road for the first time this season, traveling to Albany on Saturday, September 9 to face Region III opponent Hudson Valley Community College. Kick-off is at 1:00pm.

Herkimer won the Coliseum Soccer Club Classic Tournament by defeating #11 nationally ranked Howard CC (Maryland) 8-1. Howard defeated Mohawk Valley Community College 1-0 yesterday. Senior Joe Hunt scored four goals to lead the way for the Generals. Hunt scored the first goal 10 minutes into the game off an assist from senior Miguel Martinez. Freshman Mark Gunsch scored his first collegiate goal three minutes later off an assist from Hunt. Hunt scored his second goal with 15:30 left in the first half from Ivan Guarin. Howard got on the score board on a goal by Daisuke Nitta off an assist from Oscar Sanchez one minute later. Hunt scored his third goal of the game with 20 minutes left in the first half off an assist from Gunsch. Senior Leo Santos finished off the scoring in the first half with 10:14 minutes remaining off an assist from Guarin. Hunt opened the second half by scoring his fourth goal of the game off an assist from Gunsch 14 minutes in. Senior Handy Eugene scored the seventh goal of the game with 26:00 minutes left off an assist from senior Romaine Bruney. Freshman Chris Hlywa finished off the scoring with 9:35 remaining off an assist from Frankfort High School alum Stefano Magro. Senior Ryan Brooks-Newton finished the game with three saves.

Herkimer--The #1 nationally ranked Generals began their regular season by hosting the Coliseum Soccer Club Classic. Herkimer opened up the tournament by defeating #3 nationally ranked Borough of Manhattan, a 2005 NJCAA Division III national Final Four participant, 4-0. Freshman Ivan Guarin scored the Generals’ first goal of the season off an assist from senior Joe Hunt 16 minutes into the second half. Hunt got his second assist on a pass to 2005 National Final Four MVP Miguel Martinez two minutes later. Guarin scored his second goal of the game on an assist from freshman Dave Baldanza, a Herkimer High School graduate, with 14:10 remaining in the game. Senior Romaine Bruney finished off the scoring with 2:15 remaining off an assist from freshman Chris Hlywa. Senior Ryan Brooks-Newton recorded his first shutout of the season.
