2005 NSCAA National Coach of the Year

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Herkimer County Community College’s men’s soccer coach Pepe Aragon was named Junior College Division III National Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Aragon also received this award in 1999 and 2000.


Aragon led the Generals to their sixth national championship this season with a 21-1 overall record. As head coach for the Generals since 1998, Aragon’s teams have captured eight consecutive Region III championships, three NJCAA Division III national championships and two national runner-up finishes. He has amassed an overall record of 144-12-8 in eight seasons.
HCCC Director of Athletics, Donald Dutcher, said "Coach Aragon's playing and coaching experience make him an asset to our athletic program. He spends countless hours recruiting and working with his team in the off-season, and he truly cares about the academic success of his student athletes. All in all, Pepe is a class act."


Aragon was also named the 2005 Mountain Valley Conference and Region III Coach of the Year.

2005 NSCAA National Player of the Year

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Herkimer County Community College soccer player Dwight Barnett was named the 2005 NSCAA/Adidas Division III Junior College National Player of the Year. 

Barnett captained the Generals to a 2005 NJCAA Division III National Championship. He scored 53 goals and had 34 assists in his two years at Herkimer County Community College. He helped lead the Generals to two Region III Championships, a National 2nd place finish and a National Championship. He was named Mountain Valley Conference and Region III Player of the Year in both his freshman and sophomore years. Barnett is a two time NSCAA first team all-American. Dwight will attend NCAA Division II powerhouse Lynn University on a full scholarship.

“I am extremely proud of Dwight,” said coach Pepe Aragon.  “He is a class act both on and off of the field.”

Barnett is HCCC’s fifth student-athlete to have been named National Player of the Year.

Three Herkimer County Community College soccer players were selected to the NSCAA/Adidas Men’s Junior College All-America Team.

Senior Dwight Barnett, Jamaica, NY, was selected as a first-team All-American. A repeat first-team selection, he has compiled 53 goals and 34 assists in his two years at Herkimer.  Barnett has also been named first-team Mountain Valley Conference, first-team All-Region III, Region III Co-Player of the Year, and Region III and National Final Four All-Tournament team.

Freshman Miguel Martinez, White Plains, was also selected to the first team. Martinez scored game-winning goals in the Region III and National championship games. His other awards this season include Mountain Valley Player of the Year, Region III Co-Player of the Year, Region III Final Four All-Tournament Team, National Final Four Most Valuable Player and NJCAA 2nd Team All-American.

Senior Chris Charles, Brooklyn, was selected to the second team. Charles broke the all-time scoring record in a single season with 35 goals, and was also named first-team Mountain Valley Conference, first-team All-Region III, and Region III and National Final Four All-Tournament team.

The awards will be presented to the players at the NSCAA National Soccer Convention on January 21 in Philadelphia, PA.

November 13, 2005

Herkimer won their 6th NJCAA Division III National Championship by beating three time defending champion Richland College 2-0 in front of over 1500 fans at Wehrum Stadium.  Miguel Martinez scored the first goal of the game with 12:47 left in the first half on an assist from Mike Santacrose.  Martinez beat his defender to his left and fired home a shot just outside the penalty area beating goalkeeper Kevin Conner upper 90 to his right side.  Two minutes later, forward Chris Charles took a pass from Martinez at midfield and beat his defender down the right side of the field for a one on one breakaway and tucked the ball past Conner for the final goal of the game.  Herkimer’s defense and goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton held on for their 18th shutout of the season.  The Generals have not won the National Championship since 2000.

Miguel Martinez was named the Final Four Most Valuable Player and coach Pepe Aragon was named the Coach of the Tournament.  Dwight Barnett, Earl Chase IV, Casey Bartlett, Ryan Brooks-Newton and Chris Charles were all named to the National all-Tournament Team.

November 12, 2005

Herkimer advanced to the NJCAA Division III Men’s National Championship Game by defeating Anne Arundel CC (MD) 3-2 in double overtime at Wehrum Stadium.  Anne Arundel jumped out to an early lead three minutes into the game on a set play just outside the left side of the penalty area.  Zachary DiCarlo redirected a pass from teammate Evan Richter’s indirect kick beating Herkimer goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton to his lower left.  HCCC got the equalizer twelve minutes later when Miguel Martinez capitalized on Dwight Barnett’s pass.  Martinez beat Pioneers goalkeeper Nathan Uncapher on a one on one to his lower left side.  Chris Charles scored the go a head goal on a two on one with Barnett with 16:42 left in the first half.  Anne Arundel responded in the second half by tying the game with 21:35 left on a goal by Richter.  Brooks-Newton made the initial save, but Richter touched in the rebound.  Both teams had great opportunities to score in regulation.  Charles scored the game winner thirty seconds into the second sudden death overtime on an assist from Barnett.  Barnett took a pass from Generals defender Shaun Shand in the midfield and beat two Pioneer defenders to the end line and laid the ball back to the six yard box to Charles who first timed the pass in for the win.  The Generals will play Richland College who beat Borough of Manhattan CC in penalty kicks in the other semi-final game. The National Championship Game will kick-off at 4:00pm.  

October 30, 2005

Herkimer won their 16th consecutive Region III championship (17th overall) by defeating #2 seed Cayuga CC 4-1 at Wehrum Stadium.  Forward Dwight Barnett scored four minutes into the game on an assists from Chris Charles.  Midfielder Miguel Martinez scored the second goal of the game with 43 seconds left in the first half on an assist from Barnett.  Cayuga’s Dean Stanic responded in the second half by scoring a quick goal 1:35 into the half.  The Generals came right back by scoring four minutes later on a goal by Chris Charles who was set up by a beautiful pass from Martinez.  Charles finished out the scoring with 18:58 left in the game on an assist from Andres Benitez.  The Generals will now prepare for the NJCAA Division III National Final Four which will be hosted by Herkimer County Community College November 12th and 13th. 

October 29, 2005

The Generals advanced to their 16th consecutive Region III Championship by defeating #4 Mohawk Valley CC 6-0 at Wehrum Stadium.  Forward Chris Charles scored six minutes into the game on an assist from midfielder Miguel Martinez.  Forward Dwight Barnett scored the next two goals of the game at the 27:18 and 25:16 marks of the first half.  Midfielders Rob Esposito and Andres Benitez finished off the scoring for the half on an assist from Barnett and Earl Chase IV.  Forward Andy Darling scored the last goal of the game with 20:15 remaining.  The #1 seed Generals will take on #2 Cayuga CC tomorrow for the Region III Championship at Wehrum Stadium.  Kick-off is at 3:00pm.

October 25, 2005

The Generals advanced to the Region III semi-finals by beating #8 seed SUNY Cobleskill 5-1.  Herkimer was lead by forward Dwight Barnett who scored two goals and had an assist.  Last weeks Region III Player of the Week Chris Charles had one goal and two assists.  Midfielders Earl Chase IV and Miguel Martinez scored one goal a piece.  Goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton made three saves on the night.  The Generals host #4 seed Mohawk Valley CC Saturday at 2:30pm.

2005 Region III Play-Offs

The Herkimer County Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams have been selected as the #1 seeds for the NJCAA Region III play-offs.  Both teams will host a Region III quarter-final game in a doubleheader on

Tuesday, October 25 at HCCC’s Wehrum Stadium. 

The women’s team will play the winner of the (#8) Cayuga CC/ (#9) Alfred State game at 4:00pm.  The men’s team will play the winner of the (#8) SUNY Cobleskill/ (#9) Broome CC game at 6:00pm.

Charles named this weeks Region III Male Athlete of the Week

Herkimer County Community College men’s soccer player Chris Charles, Brooklyn, NY, was named NJCAA Region III Male Athlete of the Week for the week of October 17, 2005.

Charles was selected for his performance last weekend scoring two goals Saturday against Suffolk County Community College, the third-ranked team in the nation, and two goals Sunday against Genesee Community College. 

Charles has helped lead the Generals to a 16-1 regular season record and a number one national ranking in the NJCAA. Coach Pepe Aragon said “Chris is a leader both on and off the field.”  Charles was also named Herkimer County Community College Green and Gold Club Male Athlete of the Month for September. 

October 16, 2005

Herkimer finished the regular season off with a record of 16-1 by beating Genesee CC 4-0 at Wehrum Stadium.  Chris Charles scored a goal in each half to lead the #1 nationally ranked Generals.  Dwight Barnett and Miguel Martinez scored one goal a piece.  Ryan Brooks-Newton recorded his 15th shutout of the season making three saves. Herkimer will now gear up for the Region III play-offs which will begin Tuesday, October 25th. Game time and opponent will be announced Wednesday night when the Region III seedings are announced.

The #1 nationally ranked Generals defeated #3 Suffolk CC 3-0 at Wehrum Stadium.  Herkimer was lead by forward Chris Charles who scored two second half goals.  Miguel Martinez converted a penalty kick after Charles was taken down in the box on a breakaway by goalkeeper Shaun Sessa.  General’s goalkeeper Ryan Brook-Newton recorded his 14th shutout by making 4 saves.  Herkimer hosts Genesee CC tomorrow at 3:00pm in a doubleheader with the women’s team.

October 7, 2005

The Generals lost their first game of the season to Mercer Community College 4-0 in New Jersey.  The Vikings scored three goals in the last 20 minutes of the first half.  Mercer also snapped Herkimer’s 14 game shutout streak.  The #1 nationally ranked Generals have a week off before hosting #3 Suffolk Community College Saturday at Wehrum Stadium.  Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.

October 5, 2005

Dwight Barnett and Chris Charles scored one goal each to lead the Generals to a 2-0 win over Mohawk Valley Community College at Werhum Stadium.  Goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton helped Herkimer post their 14th consecutive shutout.  The Generals travel Friday to New Jersey to take on Mercer Community College at 7:00pm.

Chris Charles, Dwight Barnett and Leo Santos scored two goals each to lead the NJCAA #1 nationally ranked Generals to a 10-0 win at Jefferson Community College.  Andres Benitez, Ayinde George, Romaine Bruney and Andy Darling added a goal each.  Goalkeepers Ryan Brooks-Newton and Albert Jenkins combined for the shutout with one save each.  Herkimer will host Mohawk Valley Community College Wednesday night at 7:00pm.

The Generals moved to 12-0 by defeating Tompkins-Cortland CC 6-0 at Wehrum Stadium.  Senior Dwight Barnett had 2 goals and 1 assist to lead the way.  Senior Chris Charles added 1 goal and 2 assists.  Freshman Miguel Martinez, Casey Bartlett and Leo Santos all had one goal.  Freshman Ryan Brooks- Newton recorded his 12th straight shutout.  The Generals are currently ranked #1 in both the NJCAA and NSCAA national polls.

The Generals defeated #7 nationally ranked Cayuga CC 1-0 at Wehrum Stadium.  Senior Chris Charles scored the game winner on a pass from senior Dwight Barnett nine minutes into the second half.  Freshman Ryan Brooks-Newtonz recorded his 11th straight shutout.  Herkimer will host Tompkins-Cortland CC Saturday at 8:00pm.

September 27, 2005

The Herkimer Men's soccer team moved to 10-0 by defeating SUNY Delhi 3-0 at home. Senior Chris Charles scored two goals to lead the Generals. Senior Rob Esposito had one goal and one assist and freshman Miguel Martinez andAyinde George each added one assist. Freshman Ryan Brooks-Newton recorded his ninth straight shutout and the teams tenth overall. Herkimer is currently ranked #1 nationally in both the NJCAA and NSCAA polls. The Generals will take on #7 nationally ranked Cayuga CC 9/29/05 at 7:00pm at home.

September 23, 2005

The Herkimer men’s soccer team continued their shutout streak to nine straight games by defeating Finger Lakes Community College 9-0 Friday at home.  Seniors Dwight Barnett and Chris Charles combined for seven goals and three assists to lead the number one nationally ranked Generals.  Barnett scored four goals and Charles had three.  Seniors Andy Darling and Rob Esposito finished out the scoring with one goal a piece.  Freshman Ryan Brooks-Newton and senior Albert Jenkins IV combined for the shutout.  The Generals are back in action Tuesday night where they will host Delhi at 8:00 p.m. in a doubleheader with the women’s team.

September 23, 2005

Senior Dwight Barnett has been named Region III Male Athlete of the Year for 2005. The award is based on his freshman year performance on the men’s soccer team. 

In 2004, Barnett helped lead the Generals to their 15th consecutive Region III Championship and a runner-up finish in the NJCAA Division III Final Four last year.  He scored 26 goals and had 16 assists last season. 

Barnett was also selected as the 2004 Mountain Valley Conference and Region III Soccer Player of the Year, and was named to the NJCAA and NSCAA All-American teams. 

“Dwight is one of the best athletes that I have ever coached.  He is a true leader on the field and in the classroom," said Coach Pepe Aragon.

Barnett is from Jamaica, NY and is a graduate of Campus Magnet High School.  He is majoring in Business Administration at HCCC.

September 19, 2005

The men's soccer team recorded their 7th consecutive shutout with a 13-0 win over visiting Adirondack CC. Senior Chris Charles scored 5 goals and Freshman Miguel Martinez had 4 assists in the first half. Senior Andy Darling and freshman Romaine Bruney had 2 goals a piece. Seniors Dwight Barnett and Mike Santacrose each had a goal. Freshman Earl Chase IV and Rueben Areiza finished off the scoring with one goal each. Freshman Ryan Brooks-Newton and senior Albert Jenkins IV combined for the shutout. Herkimer moves to a 7-0 record and are currently ranked #1 in the latest NJCAA Division III national poll. The Generals host Broome CC Tuesday at 7:00 pm.

September 16, 2005

The #1 nationally ranked men's soccer team moved to 6-0 by defeating Fulton-Montgomery 11-0 yesterday. Senior Chris Charles scored 3 goals and had 1 assist to lead the Generals. Seniors Dwight Barnett and Rob Esposito had 2 goals each. Freshmen Miguel Martinez, Romaine Bruney, Ayinde George and senior Andy Darling each added a goal a piece. Freshman Ryan Brooks-Newton and senior Albert Jenkins each played a half in the net to preserve the Generals sixth consecutive shutout. Herkimer is back home Saturday where they will face Adirondack CC at 1:00 pm.

September 14, 2005

The men’s soccer team improved their record to 5-0 by defeating Morrisville State 6-0 at Morrisville yesterday.  The Generals defense and goal keeping recorded their fifth straight shutout.  Senior Dwight Barnett scored his 9th goal of the year by scoring the first goal of the game.  Senior Chris Charles added two goals and freshmen Romaine Bruney, Miguel Martinez and Ruben Areiza each added a goal a piece.  Freshman goal keeper Ryan Brooks-Newton recorded his fourth straight shutout.  The #1 nationally ranked Generals are on the road again Thursday at Fulton-Montgomery CC at 4:00pm.

September 10, 2005

Senior forward Dwight Barnett scored 4 goals to lead the Generals.  Senior Chris Charles added 2 goals and 3 assists.  Dillon Tiddick, and Ruben Areiza finished off the scoring with a goal a piece.  The Generals are back into Region III play again when they travel to Morrisville State Tuesday.

The #2 nationally ranked Generals moved to a 3-0 record by defeating SUNY Coblskill 4-0 at Cobleskill yesterday. Senior Dwight Barnett scored the first goal of the game from freshman Ruben Areiza with 17:47 left in the first half. Areiza served the ball to the back post to Barnett who out jumped the Tigers goal keeper Scoot Bergen. Freshman Miguel Martinez scored the second goal of the game, off an assist from senior Chris Charles, with 14 seconds left in the first half. Charles opened up the second half scoring with an assist from freshman Josh Edwards at the 32:10 mark. Senior Andy Darling finished off the scoring with an assist from senior goal keeper Bob Tator with 1:50 left in the game. Keepers Albert Jenkins, Ryan Brooks-Newton and Tator all combined for the Generals 3rd straight shutout. The Generals are back in action Saturday when they host Hudson Valley CC at 1:00pm.

Men's Soccer Opens new Stadium winning the Coliseum Soccer Club Kickoff Classic

The Generals opened their season by winning their Coliseum Soccer Club Classic which featured four nationally ranked teams. Herkimer defeated #15 Brookdale CC Friday night 5-0. Freshman Miguel Martinez began his collegiate career with a hat trick. Senior all-American Dwight Barnett had a goal and two assists. Senior Chris Charles added two assists and freshman Earl Chase IV scored his first collegiate.

Herkimer won the championship by defeating #7 Ulster CC 2-0 Saturday night. Barnett scored both goals in the second half with the assists coming from seniors Seth Kent and Roald Stanislaus.

Dwight Barnett, Chris Charles, Miguel Martinez and Casey Bartlette were all selected to the Coliseum Soccer Club Classic All Tournament Team. The Generals are back in action Tuesday at SUNY Cobleskill.

Senior Dwight Barnett scored the first goal of the game from freshman Ruben Areiza with 17:47 left in the first half. Areiza served the ball to the back post to Barnett who out jumped Tigers goal keeper Scoot Bergen. Freshman Miguel Martinez scored the second goal of the game with :14 seconds left in the first half off an assist from senior Chris Charles. Charles opened up the second half scoring with an assist from freshman Josh Edwards at the 32:10 mark. Senior Andy Darling finished off the scoring with an assist from Senior goal keeper Bob Tator with 1:50 left in the game. Keepers Albert Jenkins, Ryan Brooks-Newton and Tator all combined for the Generals 3rd straight shutout. The Generals are back in action Saturday when they host Hudson Valley CC at 1:00pm.

Former Herkimer CCC Stars Receive Awards

Former Herkimer County Community College stars Usiel Vasquez and Matt Tanzini were named the United Soccer League’s Player of the Week for their divisions.  Vasquez, who plays for the Charleston Battery of the first division, scored three consecutive game winning goals last week to receive the honor.  Tanzini, who plays for the Harrisburg City Islanders of the second division, had the game winning goal and an assist against the Western Mass Pioneers.  Vasquez was a 2002 all-American and Tanzini was the 1996 NJCAA National Player of the Year.  “What a great week for HCCC soccer.  To have two players of the week in the same week is unbelievable.  Our alumni continue to make us proud.” said HCCC coach Pepe Aragon.

Charleston downs Vancouver to win third straight as Vasquez records third consecutive game-winner

Former 2002 Herkimer CCC star Usiel Vasquez continued his scoring streak in leading the Battery to their third victory in a row and third straight game-winning goal. Vasquez scored his third goal of the season in the 21st minute to lead Charleston to a 2-0 victory over the Whitecaps. He was also named player of the game. “I spoke with Usiel today and told him how proud we are of him at Herkimer”. He continues to represent the General’s at a professional level.” Said Herkimer CCC coach Pepe Aragon. Charleston will travel to Rochester Saturday, June 25th to take on the Rhinos at Frontier Field. Game time is set for 7:35pm.

Former Herkimer CCC Men’s Soccer Star Score’s Game Winner on National T.V.

Former Herkimer CCC player Usiel Vasquez netted the game winner for the Charleston Battery Friday night against the first place Richmond Kickers. The game was televised in Charleston nationally by Fox Sports World. Vasquez scored on a first time volley in the 33rd minute. “It was an unbelievable goal. I was so proud to see Usiel score”. Said Herkimer CCC Coach Pepe Aragon. “He is really making a name for himself in that league”. It was his second consecutive game winner for the Battery. Both teams are part of the First Division of the United Soccer League. The league is one division below Major League Soccer. Vasquez, a former first Team All-American, helped lead the 2002 General’s to a National 3rd place finish. Charleston will play in Rochester against the Rhino’s Saturday, June 25th at 7:35pm.

Former Herkimer County Community College All-American Invited to MLS Combine

Former 2002 Generals star Usiel Vazquez was named Wednesday to participate in the annual Adidas Major League Soccer (MLS) Player Combine. The combine will be held January 8-11 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California. He was the only NCAA Division II player among the 66 players in the entire country selected.

After leading the Generals to two Region III Championships and a national runner-up finish, Vazquez received a full athletic scholarship to division II national powerhouse Southern Connecticut State University. At SCSU Vazquez scored 23 goals with 14 assists and had nine game-winning scores. Over the last two seasons, he helped lead the Owls to a 32-4-5 record. His combined college career record was an impressive 96-8-5.

For Vazquez's accomplishments at SCSU he was also named a NCAA Division II first team All-America. "I am extremely proud and happy for Usiel. He is one of the most skillful players that I have ever coached. I am confident that he will do well at the combine. "It is an opportunity of a lifetime to have the chance to try-out in front of all of the MLS coaches at one of the best soccer facilities in the country." "To be one of the 66 college players and only division II player invited to the combine is an unbelievable honor." Said Pepe Aragon (Herkimer CCC coach).
