Basketball Player Robby Marshall Named
Region III Player of the Year
Herkimer County Community College basketball player Robby Marshall, of Syracuse, was named NJCAA Region III Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. He is a two-time All-American and was the 2007 Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year. A 6’7” forward, Marshall averages 18.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Head coach Matt Lee said “Robby is an outstanding student-athlete, and has set the standard for future basketball players at Herkimer.” Marshall has accepted an athletic scholarship to play next fall for Division II St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas. “We will miss Robby as much off of the court as we will on the court. We are sure he will do great things for St. Edwards University next year,” said Lee.

Herkimer County Community College will host the NJCAA Region III Division III Men's Basketball tournament Friday, February 29 through Sunday, March 2. All games will take place in HCCC's Varsity Gym located in the Physical Education Building. Ranked No. 5 in the nation with a record of 24-6, the Herkimer Generals will play at 6 p.m. on Friday against Mohawk Valley Community College. Other games on Friday are at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. The semi-finals are Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The championship game will take place Sunday at 1 pm. General admission is $4 per session, students with college ID are $2, and HCCC students, faculty and staff with valid HCCC ID are free. A tournament pass may be purchased for $10.

The HCCC men's basketball team dropped the final game of the regular season to Clinton C.C. in Plattsburgh 62-53. Will Jenkins led the Generals with 12 points.
The loss dropped the Generals' record to 24-6. They received a first round bye into the Region III playoffs and will play on Friday night at 6:00 pm against an opponent that will be determined by a play-in game on Tuesday. The Region III Final 8 is hosted by HCCC starting Friday, February 29 at 1 p.m.

The Herkimer men's basketball team celebrated 'Senior Night' with a resounding 91-73 victory over conference rival Fulton-Montgomery C.C. at Herkimer avenging a 10- point loss from earlier in the season. Graduating seniors Geoffrey Brown, Antonio Burgos, Marques Damon, Akeem Flagg and Robby Marshall all scored in double figures. Brown had career highs with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Damon recorded his first ever triple-double with 18 points,11 assists and 10 rebounds. Robby Marshall again led the way with 20 points.
The Generals concluded the Mountain Valley Conference portion of their schedule with a record of 14-4. Their overall Region III record stands at 24-5 with one game remaining in the regular season on Saturday against Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh. The Generals are currently ranked fifth in the nation.

The Generals men's basketball team defeated Adirondack CC 83-65 in Glens Falls. Robby Marshall again led the way for the Generals with 20 points and eight rebounds. Antonio Burgos chipped in with 15 points and three steals and Marques Damon had nine points and nine assists.
The victory runs HCCC's record to 23-5, 11-4 in the Mountain Valley Conference. Their next contest is Thursday evening at 7:00 at HCCC. The Generals will celebrate senior night in the final home game for Geoffrey Brown, Antonio Burgos, Marques Damon, Akeem Flagg, and Robby Marshall. HCCC is currently ranked No. 3 in the U.S. and No. 2 in Region III, behind only undefeated and the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, Hudson Valley CC.

The HCCC men's basketball team defeated #8 in the country SUNY Cobleskill 74-71 before a packed house at Cobleskill in the final regular season meeting ever between the two schools. Cobleskill becomes a Division III four-year college next year.
Kevin Kucel drilled a jump shot over long time rival Harley Fuller from 34 feet with .6 seconds remaining to earn the victory for Herkimer. The Generals were down 70-59 with 3:36 left in the game when they mounted their furious comeback by outscoring Coby 15-1 down the stretch. Akeem Flagg scored nine of his game-high 30 points in that time span going two for three from three point range and three for three from the foul line. The victory brings the third ranked General's record to 22-5 as the regular season winds down this week. They take on Adirondack CC in Glens Falls on Tuesday at 6:00.

The HCCC men's basketball team dropped a Mountain Valley Conference game to rival Mohawk Valley Community College 73-60 in Herkimer. Robby Marshall led the Generals again with 24 points, but no other player was in double digits. The Generals went 11:30 scoring only seven points in the second half. The loss lowers their record to 21-5. The men take on rival SUNY Cobleskill in a battle of top ten teams on Monday in Cobleskill.

The men's basketball team improved their record to 21-4 with a 69-50 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Columbia-Greene C.C. on Monday in Hudson. Robby Marshall again led the way for the Generals with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Marques Damon added eight points, eight assists and four steals and Antonio Burgos chipped in with 11 points. The victory improved the Generals' conference record to 9-3.
HCCC remained No. 3 in the nation following this week's NJCAA poll trailing only Hudson Valley CC, Suffolk CCC, Middlesex CC of New Jersey, and Brookhaven CC of Texas.

Kucel Named to Green and Gold Club
Freshman basketball player Kevin Kucel, Gloversville, was named to the Green and Gold Club for the month of January. Kucel scored 17 points and had seven assists and seven rebounds to lead the Generals to a 56-50 victory over SUNY Cobleskill. He leads the region in free throw percentage (87.4) and averages 12.5 points, 5.2 assists, and 48% for three-point field goals. Coach Matt Lee said “Kevin has helped lead the Generals to a # 3 ranking in the NJCAA national poll. He is a hard nose player who makes the players around him better.” Kucel was named Fulton County’s Athlete of the Year in his senior year at Gloversville High School.

The HCCC men's basketball team improved their record to 20-4 with a 74-60 victory over Mountain Valley Conference rival Columbia-Greene Community College. Akeem Flagg led the scoring with 17 points. All-American Robby Marshall had 16 points and 10 rebounds and 5'7'' point guard Kevin Kucel had 11 points and 11 assists. Earlier in the day, it was announced that Kucel was the latest selection to be inducted into the HCCC Green and Gold Club.

The HCCC men's basketball team improved their record to 19-4 with an upset victory over Division II power Genesee CC 89-80 in Herkimer. All-American Robby Marshall led the Generals with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Geoff Brown had a career-high 15 points in addition to four rebounds and three steals. Akeem Flagg chipped in with 16 points, and point guard Kevin Kucel had seven rebounds, seven assists and eight points. Will Jenkins added 10 for the Generals.
The nationally ranked #3 Generals face Mountain Valley Conference rival Columbia-Greene CC Friday night at 6:00 in Herkimer. The game was originally scheduled for last Friday but was postponed due to weather conditions. The teams face off again on Monday in Hudson.

The HCCC men's basketball team was upset by Fulton-Montgomery CC 85-75 in a Mountain Valley Conference game in Johnstown. Herkimer led at the half, but was out-scored at the foul line 17-6. All-American Robby Marshall had a season-high 30 points and contributed nine rebounds and four blocked shots for the Generals. Herkimer (18-4) is currently ranked #3 in the nation.

Herkimer defeated rival MVCC 81-74 in a key Mountain Valley Conference match-up at MVCC. Akeem Flagg and Robby Marshall scored 17 points for the Generals. Flagg pulled down 13 rebounds, Marques Damon contributed 10 assists and seven steals, and Geoff Brown had a season high 12 points returning to a starting role. Reserve center Dyzelle Kelly keyed the defensive effort and contributed six points.
The victory brings Herkimer, the No. 4 ranked team in the nation, to 18-3 and runs their Mountain Valley Conference record to 7-2. The Generals have won 13 of their last 14 games losing only to No.1 in the nation Hudson Valley C.C. They return to action Friday at 6:00 against Columbia Greene C.C.

The HCCC men's basketball team lost their first game since before Thanksgiving to No. 1 Hudson Valley Community College 78-52 Saturday afternoon in Troy. The Generals were behind 50-46 with 7:30 left in the game but went ice cold from the field, getting only two baskets the rest of the game. Akeem Flagg led the team with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The loss drops the Generals to 17-3 overall and 6-2 in the MVC. Two of the three losses have been to HVCC.
Hudson Valley leads the nation with a perfect 21-0 record.
The Generals take on rival Mohawk Valley Community College on Wednesday in a Mountain Valley Conference match up at 7:00 pm at MVCC.

The HCCC men's basketball team, ranked No. 4 in the nation, defeated No. 10 Cobleskill 55-50 in a Mountain Valley Conference match-up at Herkimer. Akeem Flagg and Kevin Kucel combined for 39 of the Generals 55 points. Flagg added to his game high total of 22 with 14 rebounds and three assists. Five foot seven inch point guard Kucel had eight rebounds and eight assists, just missing out on his first career triple double. He also had three steals.
The victory runs the Generals record in Region III to 17-2, its best record since 1991, and extends their winning streak to 12 games. The Generals are second in the Mountain Valley Conference with a 6-1 record trailing only Hudson Valley Community College, currently ranked No. 1 in the nation.

The Herkimer County Community College men’s basketball team is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation according to the latest NJCAA Division III poll. The Generals (16-2) will play the No. 10 ranked SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 24 in the HCCC Varsity Gymnasium. HCCC fans are encouraged to wear green and gold as it will be ‘Green and Gold Night.’ Giveaways, prizes and halftime events are planned. Admission is free.

The men's basketball team concluded a successful weekend by winning their 11th straight game as they defeated the Clinton Community College Cougars 66-58 at HCCC. Kevin Kucel, 5'7' point guard made 5 of 6 three-pointers and dished out four assists in the winning effort, finishing with 18 points. Akeem Flagg chipped in with 16 points, and Will Jenkins hit two clutch three-pointers to seal the victory.
The Generals, ranked fifth in the nation, improved their overall record to 16-2. They host SUNY Cobleskill Thursday evening at 7:00 in a Mountain Valley Conference match up. Cobleskill is currently ranked ninth in the country.

The men's basketball team extended their winning streak to ten games with an 87-53 victory over Mountain Valley Conference rival Adirondack Community College at HCCC. Robby Marshall led seven players scoring at least eight points with a game high 21. Marques Damon scored 15 and was two rebounds and one assist shy of a triple-double. Geoff Brown added a season high 11 points.
The victory moves the #5 in the nation Generals' season mark to 15-2, 5-1 in the Mountain Valley Conference.

The men's basketball team defeated North Country Community College 63-60 in overtime in Saranac Lake. Will Jenkins, leading Region III in three-point shooting percentage, hit a clutch three-pointer with 6.1 seconds remaining in the game to force overtime. Kevin Kucel's three point field goal with 52 seconds remaining in overtime put the Generals ahead for good. Two free throws by Jenkins with 19 seconds left extended the lead to three. Geoff Brown's free throw with 2.5 seconds remaining in the game sealed the victory. Akeem Flagg scored 23 for the Generals and Robby Marshall pulled down 14 rebounds. The Generals, ranked #5 in the latest NJCAA poll extended their winning streak to eight games and improved their record to 14-2, 4-1 in the Mountain Valley Conference.

The HCCC Men's basketball team improved their record to 13-2 with a 74-51 victory over SUNY Delhi at Herkimer. Steve Campbell had eight rebounds and a career-high 14 points. Robby Marshall and Akeem Flagg also had 14 points for the Generals. Marques Damon handed out eight assists. HCCC improved their Mountain Valley Conference record to 4-1 and upped their current winning streak to seven in a row.
The nationally ranked #9 Generals travel to North Country Community College on Wednesday.

The HCCC men's basketball team opened the conference portion of their spring semester schedule with an 83-62 win over Schenectady County Community College at HCCC.
Marques Damon had 17 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, and Robby Marshall chipped in with 23 points and nine rebounds. Antonio Burgos had 14 points. The win brings the Generals' record to 12-2 overall and 3-1 in the Conference.

Akeem Flagg added 13 rebounds and Kevin Kucel had seven assists. The Generals are currently riding a six-game winning streak, running their record to 11-2.

Akeem Flagg was named to the Green and Gold Club for the month of November. A senior from Utica, Flagg helped lead the Generals to a 7-2 record during the month of November, with an average of 14.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Flagg led the team in a 76-74 conference win over Schenectady County Community College with 17 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals. “Akeem has a lot of potential. If he continues to work hard on and off the court, he will have many opportunities when he graduates from Herkimer,” said coach Matt Lee. HCCC’s Green and Gold Club honors an outstanding male and female athlete each month.

The HCCC men’s basketball team closed out the first half of their season with an 84-70 win over Broome Community College at Broome’s famed Baldwin gymnasium. Leading the way for the Generals was Robby Marshall with 18 points and 13 rebounds and Kevin Kucel with 24 points, five rebounds, and eight assists. The Generals were 24 for 28 from the foul line. The second half of the season resumes January 6 at home against Cayuga Community College.

The HCCC men’s basketball team defeated North Country Community College at home 83-46. Leading the way for the Generals was All-American Robby Marshall with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Point guard Kevin Kucel chipped in with 16 points and seven assists. The Generals doubled NCCC 50-25 in the second half. All eleven players scored for HCCC.

The HCCC men’s basketball team trounced the #6 team in the nation Tompkins-Cortland Community College 86-57 in a home contest. The Generals came out of the gate quickly going on a 10-2 run to start the game, and extending the lead to 42-19 at halftime, before cruising home to a victory.
The Generals were led by All-American Robby Marshall with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Antonio Burgos had a career high 16 points, and Kevin Kucel had 10 points and six assists. Geoffrey Brown led the way on the defensive end with eight rebounds and three steals. The Generals' next game is Sunday, December 9 against North Country Community College.

Women’s games are scheduled for 5 p.m. on December 5 vs. Tompkins-Cortland CC, and 6 p.m. on December 13 vs. SUNY Delhi. The men’s team will play Tompkins-Cortland at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5 and North Country CC at 1 p.m. on December 9. Games are held in the Varsity Gym in the Physical Education Building. Led by the defense of Geoffrey Brown and Antonio Burgos, HCCC men’s basketball team defeated SUNY Delhi 73-61 in a Mountain Valley Conference matchup at Delhi. Brown and Burgos combined to hold Darnell Cumberbatch, the fourth leading scorer in the Region, to half of his 22 point average.
Kevin Kucel scored a career high 25 points and handed out six assists. Robby Marshall and Akeem Flagg both had double doubles with Marshall scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds and Flagg scoring and rebounding ten.
The Generals next play on Wednesday, December 5 at 7:00pm against No. 7 in the nation Tompkins-Cortland Community College. The Athletic Department will be holding a food drive and will be honoring Sarah Lazarus for her 2007 national championship in Track and Field. It is also Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.

Basketball Player Robby Marshall Signs With St. Edwards University
Herkimer County Community College basketball player Robby Marshall, of Syracuse, has accepted an athletic scholarship to play next fall for Division II St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas. A 6’6” forward, Marshall is averaging 19.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game this season for the Herkimer Generals. Marshall was named a pre-season first team All-American, and last season he was named Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year and a third team All-American. Led by head coach Ryan Marks, the St. Edwards Hilltoppers were 24-6 last season.
HCCC head coach Matt Lee said “It is always great to see one of your players excel and be able to continue playing at a four-year school. Robby is a great kid and should be very successful at St. Edwards.”

The HCCC men defeated Corning Community College 89-68 in a Region III basketball game Sunday afternoon at Horseheads Middle School. Corning had previously defeated defending national champion Sullivan Community College to open the year.
The Generals were sparked by Will Jenkins off the bench with four three-pointers in a three-minute span in the first half, building a 19 point advantage.
Leading the way were Robby Marshall with 22 points and nine rebounds and Kevin Kucel with a career high 19 points and five assists. Marques Damon added 10 points and 11 assists for the Generals.

The Generals defeated Jefferson Community College 83-80. Akeem Flagg led the Generals with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Robby Marshall and Marques Damon chipped in with 16 points each. Kevin Kucel and Will Jenkins each scored a career high ten points. Kucel was 4 for 4 from the free throw line in the last 30 seconds to seal the victory.

The Generals suffered their first loss of the season to Hudson Valley Community College 113-97. The Generals were led by Robby Marshall with 25 points and six rebounds. Marques Damon had 23 points and five assists, and Akeem Flagg had 17 points. Jamel Rahiem led the Generals with eight rebounds and also chipped in with a career high 12 points.

The HCCC men's basketball team defeated Schenectady County Community College 78-76 at the Armory in Schenectady. Leading the way for the Generals was Akeem Flagg with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Robby Marshall chipped in with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Antonio Burgos had a career high 13 points including a three point basket that tied the game with three minutes to go.

The Herkimer Generals won their second game of the year against Cayuga Community College by a score of 82-59. This was the first road game for the Generals who are now 2-0. Akeem Flagg led the way with 23 points and 13 rebounds, Robby Marshall chipped in with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Marques Damon had a solid 12 points and 10 assists. Herkimer travels to Schenectady Community College Wednesday for their first Mountain Valley Conference game.

Men's Basketball Team Joins Fight Against Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins October 1, and again this year, the Herkimer County Community College men's basketball team will join in the effort to fight the disease.
HCCC Professor Donna Testa, with the assistance of the men's basketball team, has organized a community service project that will continue throughout the month of October. Memory cards will be sold for $1 each. Messages can be written on the cards in honor or memory of a friend or loved one, and the cards will be displayed throughout the campus.
At the Generals' first home game on November 1, several activities will take place to support the American Cancer Society. Activities aimed at increasing awareness among students and fans will take place including the distribution of pink ribbons to all who attend the game, and miniature pink basketballs autographed by the team will be thrown into the stands. Peter Cittadino, Community Executive Director, will make a brief presentation before the game.
