Mark D. Silliman Martin Babinec

Class of 1972 Physical Education

A native of Remsen, NY, Mark Silliman was the first student to be named "Male Athlete of the Year" at Herkimer in 1972. A scholar athlete competing on the College' s cross-country, basketball, volleyball, and soccer teams, he is credited with helping to establish HCCC's long-standing tradition combining academic and athletic excellence. He is one of the first recipients of the coveted "24 Point Award" as well.

Following completion of the HCCC Associate in Science degree, Mark also earned a B.S. at Comell University; and the M.A., M.Ed., and Ed.D. degrees at Teachers College -Columbia University. Dr. Silliman has devoted his career to education as both a teacher and an administrator. He instructed English as a Second Language in classrooms at Mohawk Valley Community College, the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees, Fashion Institute of Technology, Teachers College -Columbia University, and Hudson County Community College, where he also served as the Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.In 1996 he was appointed Dean of Instruction at Leeward Community College in Hawaii, where he currently serves as Provost.
